Author: Gilbert Morris
Series: Winslow Breed, #1
Genre: Fiction – historical

Number of Pages: 320

My Rating:

To provide for himself and his mother, Stuart Winslow works in the court of Henry VIII. When he’s assigned to deliver William Tyndale for execution, he must make a choice and either betray his friend or face execution himself.

“If I have repaid evil to him who was at peace with me, or have plundered my enemy without cause, let the enemy pursue me and overtake me; yes, let him trample my life to the earth, and lay my honor in the dust.”

These are the verses from Psalm 7 from which the title of this book originates.

Honor in the Dust is the first book in a prequel trilogy. The series that follows this trilogy is called House of Winslow and follows the Winslow family throughout US history. The Winslow Breed trilogy tells the story of the Winslow’s English ancestors.

This book is excellent historical fiction. The plot and characters are good, the character arc is compelling, and the historical setting is fascinating. Morris brings the Tudor Period to life along with some famous people—Henry VIII, one of his wives, and his daughter Mary.

The story is sweeping and almost like an epic. The opening chapter is extremely well done.

I recommend this to:

  • Readers of historical fiction.

• He straightened in the saddle and gazed with pleasure at Stoneybrook, the Winslows’ ancestral castle. It had withstood siege and battle, and it bore all the marks that time makes upon structures as well as upon men.

• He thought of the many campfires he had huddled next to in the fields, sometimes in drizzling rain and sometimes bitter cold weather, dreaming of the smells and the sounds of Stoneybrook, wishing he were back. And now, at last, he was.
